Flooding continues to be the most lethal and one of the most damaging natural hazards worldwide. The search for solutions needs to draw upon the talents and innovative ideas of scientists, engineers, and societal leaders worldwide to overcome traditional and nationalistic paradigms that have so far been inadequate to meeting these challenges.
Students in this course completed a comparative study between the Sacramento River basin in California and the Rhine River basin in western Europe addressing the question: How has Flood Risk Management (FRM) evolved as a result of key events in the Sacramento & Rhine River Basins? After touring selected sites in each basin, researching the history of flood management in each, and participating in the IHE Delft summer school on Flood-risk Management, students presented the poster below at the European Geophysical Union in spring 2024.
